Singapore Chinatown & Maxwell Hawker Centre Food
Singapore is a country with a diverse population of cultures and cuisines.
Contrasting to the rest of the city with its high-rise buildings and modern structures, Chinatown offers rich history amongst the streets of shophouses. It’s the only chinatown in the world that has a Buddhist temple ( Buddha Tooth Relic Temple), a Hindu temple (Sri Mariamman Temple, the oldest Hindu temple in Singapore), and a mosque (Masjid Jamae) on a same street.
-Chinatown Food Street
Chinatown Food Street is a stretch of food stalls and restaurants offering Chinese food and Singaporean hawker food.
Satays (grilled meats and seafood on skewers), char kway teow (stir fried rice noodles in soy sauce based sauce), roast duck, oyster omelette, and other Chinese dishes are among the most well known.
Egg tarts are a must-try; They are freshly baked daily and each shop has its own unique recipe.
It’s also a good place to find surveyors and trinkets.

-Maxwell Hawker Centre
Hawker centers are open-aired food courts and they are an important part of Singapore’s food culture. They are popular local hang outs - the food is delicious and affordable.
Maxwell Hawker Center is conveniently located in Chinatown, across from Buddha Tooth Relic Temple.
One of the must-try dishes here is Hainanese Chicken Rice. There are quite a few stalls offering this well-known Singaporean dish. Tian Tian Hainanese Chicken Rice (stall # 01-10) is popular here but other stalls are just as good.
Duck noodle is another popular staple among the locals. Succulent roasted duck is sliced and served over a plate of yellow noodles with rich dark sauce (mixture of soy sauce and Chinese hoisin sauce).
Dumpling noodle soup and pork noodles are other popular dishes and there are a few stalls to try them from.
Authentic Chinese dessert like almond jelly (almond pudding) with longan is another one of the must-eats. It is light with a delightful almond flavor and a tofu-like texture - a refreshing dessert after having savory foods.
There are also a few stalls offering Indian and Halal dishes.
Tips: Peak lunch hours (11:30 am-1:00 pm on weekdays) are very crowded. There is an ATM at the food court but it’s best to bring some cash.
