Ho'okipa Beach & Paia Town - Maui Hawaii

Maui, also known as the “Vally Isle”, is the second largest Hawaiian island. Its natural beauty and the tropical climate draws many from around the world. Whether you love beaches, lush tropical forests, waterfalls or volcanos, the island has a lot to offer.

The north shore of Maui is often an overlooked part of the island. However, there are several must-see and must-visit spots such as Ho’okipa Beach and Paia town, especially if you are doing the Road to Hana.

-Ho’okipa Beach Park

Ho’okipa means “hospitality “ in Hawaiian language and this beach is well known for surfing and turtles. The reef system here stretches across the whole bay allowing for the perfect waves to break. The beach is a favorite surfing spot for the locals and visitors.

Honu (Hawaiian Green Sea Turtles) can be spotted laying in the white sand on the far right side of the bay. They love to be admired but only from a distance (please keep about 10 feet away from them)!

Be sure to go up to the lookout and take in the breath-taking view of the beach and the ragged shoreline from above. There is a dirt trail that goes down to the cliff and also a pasture with cows and friendly chickens roaming freely.

-Paia Town

Paia Town

Paia town is known as a laid-back, surfer hippie town. It’s also an unofficial starting point of Road to Hana. It started as a plantation town with Paia Store to meet the shoppings needs of the plantation workers. It’s a cute little town lined with shops with locally designed clothing, arts, jewelry, good restaurants and cafes such as Paia Fish Market (my favorite), Cafe Des Amis, ( (love their artisan ice cream!) and Paia flatbread Pizza.

Don’t forget to stop at Mana Foods to pick up locally grown and organic produce. They also have a variety of sandwiches , salads and ready-made foods to take on the go.
