Nestled in an oasis of a ground by the river, Jim Thompson House offers a quiet escape in the middle of busy Bangkok.

Jim Thompson was an American who served in the U.S. Army during World War II.  At the end of the war, he was sent to Asia as a military officer and fell in love with Bangkok.  After leaving the service he moved to live in Bangkok permanently. He was an architect prior to the war and upon building the house, he adhered to the traditional Thai style of construction in most respects.  The house and the buildings were elevated a story above the ground to avoid flooding.  After his mysterious disappearance in Malaysia on March 26th, 1967, his home was opened to the public and the proceeds from it were donated to charities and to the preservation of Thai cultural heritage.

The house ground  is immaculately kept with a tranquil garden and the buildings are well preserved.  He incorporated some western amenities in the furnishings and in the interior of the home.

The restaurant on the ground has a nice atmosphere with a selection of Thai-western fusion dishes.  The fresh spring rolls and fish & chips were perfect!
